If debauchery had a home, it would be down here in the French Quarter. While pirates and smugglers are now replaces by tourist and college students, Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar is still standing.
This particular bar was built before 1772 and has withstood the fires and hurricanes that have swept through the city. To keep the ambiance of the old establishment the owners have kept to a strict no electric lighting policy. Candles illuminate table tops and shelves while an old blacksmith fireplace decorates the middle of the bar.
The place was once owned by the pirate Jean Lafitte and his brother. One tour guide has claimed that their treasure is buried in the chimney and according to legend only the purest of heart can get to it. Considering it's hidden in a bar, you should be able to appreciate the irony. -

Seriously, how is Lil’ Wayne still lil’, but Bow Wow is too good for it? Weezy needs to hold some kind of intervention. For Li’l Abner’s sake, if no one else’s.
Anyway. Bow Wow celebrated his 22nd birthday at Studio 54 inside MGM Grand along with svengali Jermaine Dupri, who has been with Bow wow since ‘98 when the kid was 11. They went back and forth with an hour-long freestyle before Bow Wow sprayed champagne into the crowd and shared some of his cake with a few ladies. No, that’s not a euphemism for anything. We think.

Las Vegas is in love with its mobsters. Even though anyone who has ever read the slightest tidbit of Las Vegas history knows that Bugsy Siegel didn’t found the place, he gets the credit. And not only that, he gets the glory and romance. The most commonly repeated cliché in Vegasland is, “Things were so much better when the mob ran this place.”

As President's Day weekend draws to a close here in Sin City, I feel like heaving a big, "Whew!" And I didn't even go to the All-Star Game, celebrate Chinese New Year's, get married on Valentine's Day, attend the MAGIC show, spend a three-day weekend on the Strip, or go hear Barack Obama give a speech. I didn't even take today off, but I still feel as though I've run some sort of gauntlet. If the last three days didn't bring a record number of visitors to my fair city, it sure felt that way. I've even heard it described as a "perfect storm" of a weekend.

The Maruha Japanese Steakhouse has opened in the Hickory Ridge village center. This is a Japanese restaurant with an large sushi menu, but the real center is an entire room of hibachi tables.Hibachi is the "Benihana-style" of tabletop cooking also called teppanyaki where you sit on one side of a table and the chef cooks on the other. Maruha has a series of these tabletops in deceptively large and nicely-decorated space, and they were eager to show off the hibachi room when I stopped for a menu. I was just heading into the Giant, so I did not have time to sample the food. Anyone? If you like Japanese steakhouses, you can also check out Ginza of Tokyo on Johns Hopkins Road near Rte 29. Again, I haven't been, but there was a great comment by a guy who talked up Ginza and said his kids love watching them cook hibachi.Does anyone know what happened to the Fractured Prune donut store in Hickory Ridge? Are they re-opening? It closed last fall, but it looked completely stocked when I looked through the window last weekend. There are even pallets of soda inside. If you know something, please comment on the posting about the closing.
